Latvian delegation and TechChill are heading to Slush

On Wednesday, TechChill brought together two key parties for closer partnership between the Baltic-Nordic startup scene – Latvian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economics Arvils Ašeradens and Rasmus Ekholm, Head of European Operations at Slush. The parties discussed the details of forming an official Latvian delegation to Slush, headed by the Minister and including startups, industry leaders and government officials.

During the meeting, the Minister talked about future plans for the support of startups, general industry developments as well as the newly adopted startup lawcentring around a tax regime that’s unmatched anywhere else in Europe and will effectively double venture capital investor money in young Latvian startups. The parties also shared general technological experiences and developments of their respective regions.

“The development of the startup ecosystem is one of the management priorities, to make Latvia choice number one for startups in the Baltics. Expanding cooperation with countries of Northern Europe is a significant precondition for creating further growth and innovations,” stressed the Minister of Economics after the conversation. Rasmus expressed a positive assessment of the government’s support for the growing Latvian startup ecosystem and discussed Slush’s history and experience within the Finnish startup ecosystem, as well as other cooperation opportunities.

Marija Rucevska, CEO of TechChill, also stressed the importance of Baltic – Nordic cooperation, adding that “The only path forward is through cooperation. We aim to strengthen our Baltic tech community through experience, idea exchange as well as friendly partnership, so we are excited to go on this journey together with some of our brightest startup community representatives, with the invaluable support from the Ministry of Economics of Latvia and the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA)”.

SLUSH is the largest conference for startups in Northern Europe, that is the focal point for startups and tech talent to meet with top-tier international investors, executives, and media. In 2016, Slush brought together 17,500 attendees from 130 countries for the two-day event held in Helsinki, including more than 2,300 startups and 1,100 investors. This year SLUSH will take place on 30th of November and 1st of December in Helsinki, the capital of Finland.

The Baltic startup event TechChill happens every year in February and just hosted 1100 attendees in the Baltic capital of Riga. TechChill actively cooperates with international partners in Europe to ensure opportunities for Baltic  startups to grow, network and attracting funding on a global scale, as well as to attract investments to the Latvian ecosystem. Both TechChill and Slush are members of Startup Sesame, Europe’s largest alliance of tech events.
