Latvian Startups Attract US Investor Interest in New York

To help Latvian companies enter the U.S. market, TechChill brought together Latvian startups and U.S. investors for the second edition of “Pitch to a President,” this time in New York City. Twelve Latvian startups met with investors from New York’s venture capital ecosystem, including FJ Labs, NEA, and Left Lane, and pitched their companies in the presence of the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs.
The event gave Latvian startup founders direct access to people and networks that would be significantly harder to reach from Latvia.
For Latvian startups, the U.S. market often seems distant, complex, and difficult to access. Yet scalable technology companies think globally from day one, and the U.S. is particularly well suited for rapid growth. It offers an enormous market with a large customer base, a mature investment environment, and an extensive technology ecosystem.
The appeal of the U.S. for Latvian technology companies goes beyond market size. In Europe, rapid growth often means expanding into several relatively small markets, each requiring adaptation to different languages, business cultures, regulations, and customer behaviors. On the other hand, establishing a successful position in the U.S. allows a company to scale within a single large market.
At the same time, the experience of Latvian entrepreneurs in New York demonstrated that a great product alone is not enough to succeed in the U.S. Big part of business is built on relationships, and companies without an established network in the U.S. face significantly greater challenges in reaching the right investors, customers, and partners. That is why the value of visits like these goes beyond the opportunity to pitch a company in just a few minutes. They provide a starting point for building relationships that can eventually turn into investments, partnerships, or customer contracts.
Several companies in the delegation are already working with customers and generating revenue, but see U.S. capital, customers, and connections as an opportunity to accelerate their next stage of growth. The diversity of the delegation also highlighted the wide range of industries in which Latvian companies are already building technologies for global markets, from autonomous underwater solutions and energy to biotechnology, artificial intelligence, advertising technology, and sports management.
The participating startups were: Balsio, Monetizr, Engycell, Submerge, Spotwise, Supliful, Tournated, Capture Study, HoneyB AI, Cellbox Labs, Lexu AI, and Crowdable.
“Latvia’s size can actually be an advantage in this regard. Local founders cannot afford to spend years focusing solely on the domestic market, so they learn to think beyond borders very early on. In the U.S., it quickly becomes clear whether a company can articulate the problem it solves, who needs its solution, and why that particular company has the potential to succeed in its category. Meetings like these not only help founders connect with investors but also allow them to understand much faster what they still need to do to compete in the U.S. market,” explains Annija Mežgaile, CEO of TechChill.
“Pitch to a President” was organized by TechChill in collaboration with FJ Labs, Rho, Change Ventures, and the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA).
